A lot can be said in a short amount of time if you include enough detail. One sentence is enough for you to learn something about the characters, setting and circumstances.

Use these one-sentence stories to inspire you to write a longer piece or simply enjoy reading them for their own sake:

1) The last time she saw her father, he was stumbling down the stairs, fumbling for the keys of his pick up truck.

2) The arrival of the new baby ignited extreme jealousy in Hector the Cat until one night, he decided to put an end to this new intrusion.

3) So many lives were lost in the battlefield that day as Richard stumbled towards the trenches, escaping a bullet by seconds as he hurled himself down the muddy banks.

4) A slow creak was heard behind her as Karen’s hands froze in mid-air while attempting to light the candle.

5) The shining sun and perfect waves made John smile until he looked down under his surfboard and saw something very large coming towards him.

6) While trying to extract information, the doctor yelled at the parent whose child had a broken leg until he realized: the mother was deaf.

7) The dream she had of marrying her high school sweetheart came true at 85 years of age.

8) As he looked into the eyes of the man begging him for help on the street, he realized it was his old classmate who had tormented and bullied him all through high school.

9) She never forgave herself for going to the dance that night, knowing her little sister was sick and with no one to look after her.

10) The only time he really ever felt lost, was when he came home after so many years of traveling.

11) As she looked out the window, she couldn’t believe what she saw: the town’s two biggest enemies were now hugging each other as though they were long lost friends.

12) As Shirley slowly made her way up the stairs into the abandoned bedroom, she jumped as the grand piano downstairs suddenly began to play “Happy Birthday”.

13) As much as she loved her older brother, she had to decide whether or not she loved him enough to sacrifice the rest of her life to take care of him.

14) As the friends spent hours cooking and preparing for their Thanksgiving feast, in the end it was Debbie who realized they had forgotten to thaw the turkey.

15) Though it made it impossible for her to have her dream wedding on the beach, her mother assured her that rain on your wedding day was a good omen.

16) As he slammed his fist down on the table with rage, his wife took off her apron and never put it on again.

17) The pool was drained this morning in honor of the Conner boy who would never see his next birthday.

18) The best and the worst news she ever received came on the same day: that she was pregnant with her first child, and that her husband, Bill, had been killed in a car accident.

19) As the storm raged over them, Rachel held onto the wheel of the ship with all her might while the captain was passed out cold.

20) Simon took his first breath of fresh air in nearly 24 hours as the diggers finally made it through to where the avalanche had buried him.
